Over the months a hard-working Constitution Committee has been preparing changes to our Constitution and Bylaws and they would like to have an informational meeting to discuss proposed changes to the (governmental) structure of Gateway Covenant church.
Following is a copy of a letter to all members, non-members, friends and regular attenders which is in the process of being circulated, explaining a brief history and summary of what the Committee has been working on.
If you would like to receive a hard copy of the Constitution and Bylaws both as they stand and the proposed changes, please contact the church office.
Dear Members and Friends of Gateway:
Last fall the Executive Board of Gateway Covenant church appointed a Constitution Committee which was requested to review the Constitution and Bylaws of Gateway Covenant church, and to seek ways to make them more workable for Gateway both as it is today and into the future.
Over the years society has become more mobile and transient. Long-term membership in secular organizations and in churches has dropped. People tend to spend only a few years in a community and, for Christians, in any given church. But Christians still want to contribute actively in their church home.
Gateway Covenant church is organized as “Congregational”, meaning that the ultimate decision-making authority always rests with the Congregational Meeting of church members. The structure by which the wishes of the membership are put into practice, currently uses the Board system of leadership which (to be fully operational given our current size) requires sixteen elected church members each year.
Recognizing the changing face of church membership, the Constitution Committee has been working hard to find ways to streamline our current structure to make it more compatible with the realities of today’s church. To that end, the Committee is proposing a change in the Bylaws replacing the Board system with a Council of seven church members.
The church Council will operate with a number of committees, each chaired by a member of the church Council. All of the committees, with the exception of the Spiritual Care Committee, Pastoral Relations Committee and the Gifts Discernment Committee, will include members and non-members alike.
A number of other changes are also being proposed.
Attached, please find a copy of the Constitution and Bylaws of Gateway Covenant church as they currently stand, and the proposed new Constitution and Bylaws. You are invited to read them over and then attend an informational meeting to discuss the proposed changes.
The meeting will be held Thursday, September 08, 2005, 7pm at the church. Members and non-members are encouraged to attend and participate actively in the discussion.
Note: A Notice of Motion to change the Constitution was presented at the January 2005 Annual Meeting.
A Notice of Motion to change the Bylaws will be presented at the September 22, 2005 Congregational Meeting.
We look forward to seeing as many as can make it to this important meeting.
Hope everyone is having a safe and relaxing summer.
Watch this space for our upcoming fall schedule.
